The Frame and Wing
Structural envelope · Wing span · Lift capacity · Base weight of the great machine
Leonardo writes in the margin of his Codex: “The bird which flies by the beating of its wings against the air must have wings of sufficient breadth that the air compressed beneath them may sustain the weight above.” Your first decision is the scale of this ambition.
The wing of the great ornithopter mirrors the branching structures observed in nature — the nervous tree, the vascular system, the dendritic spread of root below ground. Leonardo understood: what holds in a body holds in a machine. The spar is the spine. The ribs are the branches. The membrane is the skin. Every material choice made here is also a biological choice — what the machine can bear, and what it cannot.

Leonardo’s own formulation. A membrane that captures warmth from the sun and reduces wing-beat requirement. Theoretical — its construction demands his personal supervision.

Motive Power
The source of flight · Drive mechanism · Range and operating cost
“The movement of the bird ought to be studied as the model of the mechanical bird.” But the mechanical bird must also be driven. The choice of motive power determines where your vessel may fly and at what cost to its passengers, its operators, and to heaven itself.
The great clock-spring, once wound, drives the mechanism until the energy is spent. The steam furnace produces power without limit of spring — but at the cost of smoke, weight, and theological controversy. Each mechanism chosen here carries its own weight, its own cost, and its own range. The choice of motive power is the choice of what kind of enterprise this will be. Choose as though the horizon you name is the horizon you must actually reach.

Leonardo’s most radical proposal — a mechanism that harnesses the spirit of the sun through concentrating mirrors. Weather dependent. Extraordinary on a clear day over Lombardy. Useless in the Flanders winter.

Passenger Decks
Classes of passage · Cabin numbers · Ticket tariff per leg
Your accommodation determines your revenue. Set the number of places in each class and the price charged per passenger per leg of the journey. The tariff floors and ceilings respond to your route distances and the provisions you have selected — price below the floor and you signal desperation to your patrons; above the ceiling and you signal foolishness.

Provisions & Arts
Onboard amenities · Each adds weight, cost, and ancillary revenue · Each is a statement of intent
Consider what is coherent with your class of passenger. The ambassador's chamber expects different provision from the common gallery. A vessel that commissions a banquet hall but offers common passage reveals a confusion of purpose that no patron of intelligence will overlook.
The provisions aboard are the character of the vessel made manifest. The rose and the chalice, the chapel and the gaming table — each signals something to those who come aboard, and something to those who commission you. Leonardo observed that the structure of a plant — its root depth, its branching, its relationship to what sustains it — reveals the conditions under which it was grown. The provisions you select reveal the same.

The Grand Itinerary
City mooring towers · Select a minimum of three cities · Build a circular route
The great cities of Christendom and beyond have constructed mooring towers for vessels of this class — campanili and fortresses adapted for aerial arrival. Your itinerary determines your revenue per voyage, your fuel requirements, and the character of the passengers you may expect to attract.
The navigator's instruments determine what can be reached and what cannot. The compass rose measures bearing. The dividers measure distance. The gradatum measures angle of ascent and descent. Before selecting the cities of your itinerary, confirm that your motive power can carry you between them — not in theory, but at the range stated in your design. A route that cannot be completed is not a route. It is a failure waiting to be timed.

These projections are your argument to the patrons. They are not guarantees — no commission has ever flown exactly as designed. What they are is the quality of your thinking under conditions of uncertainty. The patronage panel will test that quality. Ensure every number has a reason behind it, and that you know the reason.
